Reading

Non-fiction

I just finished Working in Public: The Making and Maintenance of Open Source Software by Nadia Eghbal.

It was interesting to read about a world I’ve been a part of and to have some concepts defined and discussed. My big takeaways are that software has this historical burden to it because people didn’t know how to make money off of it. It looks like writing, but is only words on a dead tree with no value until you try to use it. And once you try to use it, it’s alive and needs to maintained like an aging dog. Software is also not like a commodity that loses value once more people use it. Software can be ideas, and ideas want to spread and be free (as in beer) and should be free (as in freedom).

But people pour their time into writing free software for some intrinsic reason. And there’s a group of people that think throwing money at free software is a waste and cheapens the motivation of the developer or some how takes away from the nobleness. I totally disagree with this point though. People have bills to pay, and some people come up with good software that solves a lot of problems for a lot of people. And some people are literally a load bearing wall of the Internet and deserve to be compensated for the value they created out of thin air.

Wow, this got longer than I expected. Maybe I’ll put this into a separate post.

The last thing I want to say about this book is that I got it through Philly’s Free Library’s Interlibrary Loan program. This book came from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. That’s on the west of the mitten side. And there is currently a labor union strike in Philly that is shutting down a lot of the libraries throughout the city. Hopefully I can return this book soon.

Fiction

I’m not entirely sure when I started it, but I’ve been reading Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Still going. When I started it, I was inspired to get into game development. And as the story is progressing, it’s starting to feel more like every day life and less like this “I have all the time in the world to get lost in playing god in my own world”.

I hope I finish it soon.

TV

I started Dark Matter which is based off of a book by the same name. I remember the broad strokes of the book, but it’s fun to see it visualized now.

We watched a couple of episodes and switched over to Master Baker Season 4 by QTCinderella. Inhaled that and this was our first time, so we went backwards to Season 3 too.

Gaming

Fortnite is obviously still in my life. The superhero season started not that long ago (I’d say in the last month). And Blitz mode was added about 2 weeks ago. Blitz has been a breath of fresh air, despite how buggy and laggy the game start up always seems to be.

The first week had a showcase of weapons - a lot of the greek gods stuff.

The second week was the Avatar stuff again, which was fun to do water bending and earth bending again. The map was too small to enjoy air bending. And the game was too short (and stingy with the elemental scrolls) to be enjoyed as the Avatar.

This week is “bad boss” week or something and it’s been okay. I heard next week is Ninja Turtles and I don’t remember those weapons being all that much fun. Rumor has it that Blitz is done after that, which is a shame because it’s one of the most fun modes Epic has released in a while. Having said that, I should try their racing mode. Lego mode was fun for a while; fall guys was fun for a night; I have yet to do a concert in the music mode, but I also don’t plan to ever. Oh and the legacy mode doesn’t have the same nostalgia pull for me.

My TikTok feed showed me some people showing crazy clips of them playing Megaman Battle Network. That was enough to inspire me to boot that game back up. I have it on my Switch and I swear I had a save file from when I first bought the game many moons ago, but I had nothing and didn’t mind starting over too much. I need to remember it as a easy offline game to hop into.

TV

Currently working through “The Apothecary Diaries”. Season 1 wrapped up earlier this week.

This is to supplement the weekly releases of “Solo Leveling”.

Gaming

Still playing Fortnite.

I’ve been getting back into “Dave the Diver” too. My story is advancing slowly, but I’ve seen so much time farming resources that I think I’m too strong for the current level.

On the mobile gaming front, I’ve discovered that one of my favorite mobile games (“Good Pizza, Great Pizza”) has a barista varient. So I’ve been making lattes in between other little tasks.

Art

I’ve been workingo on recycling a lot of clay in the studio lately. It’s a time consuming process. But it’s interesting to see that I can draft and draft and draft, and none of that material actually goes to waste.

TV

Just finished watching Pantheon on Netflix. Highly recommend if you’re into sci-fi and tech. It’s a 2 season, 16 episodes total, 40-ish minutes per episode kind of show.

Gaming

Still playing Fortnite. Enjoying the new season with the Kneecapper and dashing around to club people with a bat.

In Go, my rank is slowly climbing because I’ve been watching some strategy videos from Shawn Ray. I can beat bots like 60% of the time around my level and even like 60% of the time against stronger bots with the appropriate handicap set. If I can play enough this month, I’d like to move off of the 9x9 board and go up to 13x13 and see the game changes there.

Art

I’ve been prototyping things in the studio and in general feeling more inspired to go to the studio and work on things. I see a longer blog post in the future detailing some new work.

I picked up SICP JS again.

I even wrote up my solutions to a few exercises

Apps

I discovered that anytype recently released their multiplayer feature, so I’m going to try and switch off of Notion for some things and move to Anytype.

I picked up and started some books

Go

I downloaded this app to play more games. And I’ve been kicking the weak AI’s butt. But the less weak bots give me trouble still

Self Hosting stuff

I’m working on my tech independence and putting my tech skills to the test.

This also relates to things I’ve been reading about permacomputing. By keeping the services I depend on to things that I can host and maintain and on older hardware that I’m in charge of, maybe I’m taking a step towards making technology more sustainable for the planet.

Go

In my spare time, I’ve been learning how to play Go.

BJJ

I got my purple belt from Balance Studios on 2023-10-28.
